Net-juu no Susume Breaking the Romantic Mold

Unpopular opinion but I never liked romance anime. The narrative was generally very bare-bones and melodramatic. There was not much creativity put into them, considering the majority of them take place in high school and look very plain overall. Net-juu no Susume has chosen to conceptually divert its attention to how 2 MMO junkies come to meet and fall in love through gaming and how the anime uses its otherworldly advantage to create a more colorful pattern in its background feels like there’s a more cheerful vibe which I think suits a romance show a lot better than a lukewarm interpretation of Japan or high school that was made to be dramatic for the sake of amplifying drama. Conflict is fine; even necessary a lot of the times. However, I do not favor playing up the dramatic effect by making things look dark and depressing. It just reminds me of Spanish soap operas.

And really, that’s it. I could talk more about the characters but I’d like to watch more of the series and talk more on it as there’s not much to talk about. I just wanted to express that really quick. Maybe I’ll do more shorts like this.

Don’t think I’ve ever commented on your blog and I’m not that familiar with you, but…hello!

Aside from the bit about Spanish operas, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Netjuu no Susume gives me a tonne of warm fuzzies, and so far, the only other romance show to win that distinction would be Ore Monogatari!! (My Love Story!!), which has a strong comedy bent to leverage the romance, plus it’s told from the dude’s perspective. (Sorry if you’ve watched it already…)

No, I haven’t. I mean, I kind of know where it comes from. It subverts the idea of both characters being attractive and tells a more light-hearted romance story. Which is fine; much more preferable than romantic dramas. However, still not my cup of tea.
